①スティーブン・タイラーをボーカルに…

Just Feel Better（ジャスト・フィール・ベター）は、エアロスミスのスティーブン・タイラーをボーカルに迎えて、サンタナが2005年にリリースした曲。

アルバム『オール・ザット・アイ・アム（All That I Am）』にも収録され、そこからのセカンド・シングルとして発売されたんですが――結果は、イギリスで最高77位。

 

……いやいや、もっと上でもよくないですか？

サンタナとスティーブン・タイラーという夢の共演で、このクオリティで77位は、さすがに低すぎるでしょ。

切なさと力強さが同居していて、メロディラインもキャッチーで、サビでグッと心を掴まれる、まさに“泣けるロックバラード”だと思うんだけどなぁ。

③サンタナの代名詞とも言える…

『Just Feel Better』は、カルロス・サンタナの代名詞とも言える“泣きのギター”と、スティーブン・タイラーのハスキーで渋みのあるボーカルが絶妙に絡み合う一曲です。

歌われているのは、付き合いを続けるうちに少しずつすれ違っていった二人の心。それでも「もう一度、うまくやり直したい」と願う男の想いが、切なくもまっすぐに描かれています。

 

エアロスミスのように激しくロックしているわけではなく、どちらかというとポップで聴きやすい。でも、その分メロディには深い哀愁があって――そこがまたたまらないんですよね。

そして、やっぱりサンタナのギター。

叫ぶでもなく、語りかけるでもなく、まるで“泣いている”ようなフレーズで、曲の世界へと引きずり込んでくる。ひとつひとつの音が感情を持っていて、聴いているうちに心がじわっと熱くなります。

スティーブン・タイラーもさすがで、官能的にギターと絡み合いながらも、サビでは一転してエモーショナルに突き抜ける。激しくシャウトするタイプの彼もいいけど、こうして抑揚を込めて“聴かせる”歌い方をしている姿も最高なんです。

派手にロックしているわけじゃないのに、ちゃんと熱がある。良くも悪くも“万人が気持ちよく聴ける”タイプの曲なんだと思います。

 

④どうしてこの曲が売れなかったのか…

どうしてこの曲が売れなかったのか――。

 

2005年当時の音楽シーンって、アメリカではヒップホップやR&Bが全盛で、Maroon 5 や Green Day、Kelly Clarkson なんかが強かった時代。

一方でイギリスは Coldplay、Kaiser Chiefs、そしてデビュー前夜の Arctic Monkeys が盛り上がりを見せ、いわゆる“インディーロックが勢いを増していた時期”でした。

そんな中で、サンタナとスティーブン・タイラーという“親世代のレジェンド同士”の共演は、どうしても懐メロ的に見られてしまったのかもしれません。どんなに曲がキャッチーでも、時代の流れには合わなかったというか。

 

しかもこの曲は、ロックすぎず、ラテンすぎず、ポップすぎず――良く言えば絶妙、でも、悪く言えば中途半端。

さらに前作「Smooth」の成功が大きすぎて、「派手さが足りない」と見なされてしまったというのもあるでしょうね…。

 

それでも今あらためて聴くと、やっぱり良い。

あの時代には合わなかったかもしれないけれど、今もこの曲を聴き続けている人は、きっと少なくないはず。
