イーグルスが再結成を果たしたアルバム『Hell Freezes Over』（1994年）で、新曲4曲を披露した翌年。グレン・フライもまた、自身のベストアルバム『Solo Collection』（1995年）で4つの新しい楽曲を発表しました。

そのうちのひとつが、「This Way to Happiness」。

幸せへと続く道がどこにあるのかわからず、孤独を抱えながら悶々とした日々を過ごす一人の男。そんな彼がようやく“幸せ行きの列車”を見つけて、「君」と二人で乗り込んでいく――。

まるでそんな情景が浮かぶような、軽やかなビートとR&Bフレイヴァーをまとったロマンチックな曲。

イーグルスが“再出発”を果たしたように、グレン・フライ自身もまた、ここで新しい旅に出た。「This Way to Happiness」は、そんな彼の“始まり”を感じさせる一曲です。

③「Take It Easy」「Lyin' Eyes」など…

アメリカが生んだ偉大なロックバンド、イーグルスのボーカリスト兼ギタリスト、グレン・フライ。彼は「Take It Easy」「Lyin' Eyes（いつわりの瞳）」「New Kid in Town」「Tequila Sunrise」など、数々の名曲でリードボーカルを務めました。

一方で、イーグルスというともう一人のボーカリスト、ドン・ヘンリーの印象が強い人が多いと思う。まぁ当然といえば当然ですよね。「Hotel California」でボーカルとドラムを担当していたドン・ヘンリーは、“ボイス・オブ・イーグルス”　“ボイス・オブ・ホテル・カリフォルニア”と呼ばれるほど存在感が大きかったわけですから。

そんな中で「This Way to Happiness」は、見落とされがち（？）なグレン・フライの才能を感じさせてくれる曲。

ドン・ヘンリーが社会的なテーマや内省的なメッセージを描いていたのに対し、もっと軽やかで洗練されたポップ・センスを前面に出していたグレン・フライ。

この曲もまさにそんなスタイルで、爽やかさとR&Bの心地よさが絶妙に混ざり合った佳曲。サビに向かって少しずつ盛り上がっていく構成で、「ここがサビだ！」って誰が聴いてもわかるような明快さ、軽快さも魅力。

イーグルス時代の “メロウで温かい声” “都会的でちょっと切ない曲” のような雰囲気ではないけれど、抜群にキャッチーで、たぶん日本でも受け入れられやすいタイプの曲なんじゃないかな。

サビは爽快さもあって、ビールのCMで流れていてもしっくりくると思いません？
